Living Backwards

My question of the day is, why is it cheaper, healthier and generally more fun to do things the old fashioned way?   Some examples: Maple Syrup – you can tap your own trees with very basic equipment and boil it down for less then the cost of purchasing it at the grocery store. Its right there, out your window in spring time Apples – grow an apple tree and get KNOWN organic, fresh apples for FREE. You know where they were grown, from where they traveled (across your yard), how fresh they are, whether they’ve been injected with growth hormones (i hope you don’t inject your apple tree with growth hormones :S) Coffee – You can purchase your coffee ground from the store for an amount of money, or you can take one step back and buy...

Quiet Christmas

This year we had a white Christmas which was excellent (see pic). We got it a few days before Christmas. I’ve had lots of opportunity to get out on my lawn tractor and push snow around. I love using my gas powered tools! I always enjoyed shoveling snow. Its a fresh experience every time, fresh cold air, different snow to move, different obstacles to get around, different types of snow, different times of day. Even better if its snowing out WHILE pushing the snow around. Its just a relaxing sort of thing yet it burns a few calories too. I’ve eaten SO much already, mostly sugar :/ Too much.   Today, Boxing day as I write this, is going to be a lazy day where I just stoke the fire – though I should do a load of firewood. Mostly for my...

Beyond Convenience

So I learned something today, which isn’t uncommon (the learning part) but it was something I never really thought of before in terms of doing for others. So this morning I, and a bunch of guys went and helped clean what is to become a mens shelter. I scrubbed walls, others swept, we moved some furniture, put up a tree. CBC video taped, someone from the local paper was there snapping photos of us all diligently scrubbing and sweeping, all for the Lord right?! For sure, it was needed and appreciated, and it is my holidays so it was a little out of my way but we did 1.5 hours of work, and called it a good day of ‘being Christ like’. Not to diminish it, it was work that many others just wouldn’t offer to do and its time out I could have spent...

3 keys to successful mornings

»Posted by on Dec 13, 2011 in General | 0 comments

This is like one of those crazy ‘good living’ sermons. Here are my 3 keys to successful mornings.    The caveat being that really,… its all a joke but they are nice things and we enjoy them in our house.   Fire – its -4 or so out in Wheatley River, a good day for a roaring fire. Isn’t every day good you say? Well, our behemoth of a fire place (an Ardent F101 wood forced air furnace: http://ardentenergy.ca/index_files/f101.htm ) likes a colder day to really get used. Otherwise it sits there idling cause we don’t want to put in too much wood since the house will get warmer anyways during the day right. So ya, the colder the better for it as we can stoke it up – and it takes some good chunks of...

So busy, and car problems

Oh where oh where have I been. The last week or so has been packed. We’ve been working on our dining room, mudding, sanding, painting. Sunday was Sunday with worship team morning and night, actually I got to do AV in the morning. I do enjoy doing that!  Then monday was work and choir practise (oh, and our transmission died in our car). Lindsey was stranded in Kensington, so I took my bike out to meet her and the tow truck. Thankfully we got a good recommendation for a tranny shop the week before. I called them up, they arranged the tow, and are doing all the work to find us a used tranny. I was actually very impressed by the guy on the phone. Knew what he was talking about, was almost apologizing for the cost of the tranny for our car (which is...
